Driving Sustainable Change Through
Culture, Skill, and Environment

"Vikalp" is a Non Profit Non Government organization dedicated to bringing positive and sustainable change to society. We were founded with the fundamental idea that in the mad rush for development, we are leaving behind our nature, our roots (culture), and the livelihoods of the underprivileged sections of society.

"Vikalp" means "another path" or "choice." We believe that current problems (such as pollution, unemployment, and cultural erosion) can only be solved by adopting an integrated approach beyond traditional methods. We link environmental protection with skill development. To keep the flame of our culture burning bright, we breathe life into our heritage through diverse celebratory experiences.

Our organization is guided by a dedicated board of experienced social workers, environmentalists, educators, and artists. We have a strong team of enthusiastic grassroots volunteers and trainers, which has ensured the organization has remained committed to achieving its goals since 1993.

The organization's objective is to raise awareness among women, youth, and especially children in every field, from literacy to technology, from art and culture to environment and health. The aim is to introduce women to Indian culture through books on great men and historical memories, and through cultural activities such as plays and folk songs. The organization also aims to empower women to take the lead in both domestic and social life, and to impart knowledge of Indian culture and values to children, instilling moral values and positive thinking in them.

Every year, the organization organizes cultural programs, workshops, seminars, and different types of competitions for students and women on International Non-Violence Day, International Environment Day, International Yoga Day, National Science Day, and National Mathematics Day, etc.

In order to protect the environment, it collects plastic and glass bottles from hotels and junkyards and trains women to convert them into decorative items. The organization also works to make decorative items from junk using twine.

The organization always motivates women from tribal, backward classes, minorities, and other weaker sections to get free skill training and progress in society.

The Vikalp Method

We don't separate environment from livelihood from culture. We see them as one interdependent system — and we design our interventions accordingly.

Environment + Livelihood

We train women to make useful items from plastic waste. This saves the environment and provides them with livelihoods.

Culture + Livelihood

We provide training to rural artisans in traditional handicrafts, keeping the art alive and providing employment.

Stories of Transformation

Real journeys from the communities we serve — told in their own words.

"

Before Vikalp came to our village, I threw away plastic and cloth scraps. Now those same materials are purses I sell at the city market. My daughter's school fees come from this work. I never imagined waste could give us dignity.

"

My grandmother painted Gond art on walls that no one would pay for. Vikalp trained us to put it on paper, canvas, fabric — and now my paintings are sold in Delhi and abroad. Our culture is not dying. It is travelling the world.

"

As a government officer working on MGNREGA implementation, I have seen many NGOs. Vikalp is different. They don't just execute projects — they build community ownership. The impact lasts long after the funding ends.

"

Our SHG had 12 women who knew how to weave but had no buyers. Vikalp connected us to an e-commerce platform and a fair-trade export house. Last year, our collective earned over ₹8 lakhs. Every woman in my group now has a bank account.
